Walking in the Light of the Lord

"Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord! ... The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine." (Isaiah 2:5, 9:2, NLT)

The prophet Isaiah describes how God was preparing to bring His great light to the dark confusion of the world. Darkness in the Bible describes a society in chaos and rebellion just like what we see all around us. All through the Bible, we see that God’s light heralds His presence and His truth.

Also in this passage, Isaiah invites the people of Israel to “walk in the light of the Lord.” The prophecy was fulfilled through Jesus who boldly declared, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).

Therefore, the invitation is no longer just for the people of Israel, but for all humanity. What a blessing to all! It’s no longer just for Israel, but also for us with all our quirks and deficiencies and all of our doubts, fear and shame. We can all walk in the light of the Lord. What a relief!

Patricia, Clayton, Robin and I are lifted up by these passages. God’s Word gives us the strength and courage to share this hope with our Native American brothers and sisters at Haskell Indian Nations University and beyond.

Father God, let the light of Christ shine in our lives so that we may glorify You. Help us to walk in the light of the Lord. Daily teach us the truth in Your Word. Amen.
