Rev. David Sternbeck on Volunteer Service
The task of being a missionary in Alaska is huge! First, the state alone is two-and-half times larger than Texas with about 100 villages in isolated locations. The only way to reach them is by boat or airplane.
The need for ministry is enormous because many of these places have no spiritual leadership. And, yet, our goal and mission at Lutheran Indian Ministries is to raise up and equip men and women who can minister to their own people. Sometimes it is hard to decide just how much time one devotes to ministering to or raising up potential spiritual leaders. Both needs are so great!
This is where the need for volunteers is unique. They assist with the well being of the faith community, allowing us the time to equip leaders who will then allow the Gospel to be Indigenized to a particular community.
