Light in the Sky (Advent Devotion) - Friday, December 28
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him."
(Matthew 2:1-2 ESV)
A comet briefly flashed across the night sky at the moment of his birth. His Shawnee parents believed the comet was the great Panther spirit announcing that their son would be a wise and powerful leader. So, his father gave him the name "Panther Across The Sky.”
When he became a man, he was determined to free Native Americans from the advancing non-Native culture. He displayed the ability to lead his people with convincing speeches. He was a genius at using strategies to unite many tribes and served as their military leader on several occasions. He is credited with several quotes such as, “Show respect to all people, but grovel to none.”
He is the subject of numerous books, sculptures, and a historical play. Towns, schools, ships, military bases, and even people are named after him. I learned about him during the years I lived in Southwest Ohio. He was the famous warrior Tecumseh. *
Another man is known as a great leader. There was a light in the sky announcing His arrival, too. Wise men saw it and followed it a great distance to visit him. They brought Him gifts which signified His role as King, Chief Priest, and Holy Sacrifice. As a man, He talked to the people to help them understand God’s love and path for life. He died to free everyone from eternal death. Now, He is alive in heaven praying for us. He said, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6 ESV)
He is the All-Powerful Warrior Jesus. He is the light in the sky that we follow as we move through our daily lives. He is our compass for the year ahead.
Jesus, I surrender to You as my King, Chief Priest, and Holy Sacrifice. I trust You to lead me on the right path. Thank You for dying to set me free from eternal death. In Your name, Amen.
